We
all know the reputation of a stag do; they are
loud, involve one or more strippers, and a lot,
I mean A LOT, of alcohol. Being a groomsman for
the wedding, this may be your idea of a good time,
but it may not be the groom’s definition
of fun. When planning to help the groom say “good
bye” to single life and “hello” to
marriage, keep two things in mind. The tastes and
personality of the bride and the groom! You don’t
want to cause shock or unrest with either or worse
still friction in a marriage that has not yet begun.
Talk with your fellow groomsmen, and decide whether
the stag do will be a surprise or not. If not talk
to the groom and pick a convenient date a week
or two before the wedding. It is a big no-no for
the groom to show up still drunk or hung-over to
his wedding, and being in this condition may even
make his marriage invalid depending on local laws.
Choose an activity that all will enjoy, and keep
the cost of the activity in mind, so that everyone
invited can afford to participate.
Get creative with ideas for the bachelor party
and use the groom’s pastimes and hobbies
to finalize a decision. Maybe see a football game
with pizza and beer afterward. Play a round or
two of golf together, and head out for dinner at
the groom’s favorite sports bar. Get a hotel
room and play poker with the food and drink catered
in. Maybe the groom would like a hunting or fishing
trip with snacks and beer at the local watering
hole. Any of these ideas would be great to send
the groom off with a bang.
When planning the stag do, start several months
before the wedding, so that you have time to contact
all the people involved. If the party is not a
surprise, ask the groom who he would like to be
there and get names, phone numbers, email addresses
and physical addresses for those people. Most of
the contact you have with the proposed guests can
be by email or phone, but the actual invitation
to the event should be written and sent by postal
mail and a few weeks prior to the event.
As the host of the event, you should be sure that
all expenses are either paid before hand or arranged
ahead of time. Since the groom is the guest of
honor, his expenses are covered by the wedding
party. Once all of that is taken care of make sure
that the guests have a blast, and don’t forget
to enjoy the day yourself.
