How Many Bridesmaids?

Have you decided how many bridesmaids you want to have at your wedding yet? This is an important aspect to consider as the number you decide on will have a knock on effect on your wedding day in more than one way.

For example the natural assumption for some brides is that they should have a lot of bridesmaids. But remember that every bridesmaid you choose will add a significant amount to the overall cost of your wedding. There is the dress to think about, the accessories and shoes. It might not sound like much but if you multiply the cost of those items by eight or ten, you will soon see that having plenty of bridesmaids can push the cost up considerably.

Some people think that is simply isn’t necessary to have lots of bridesmaids, and there is a lot of truth in this. When you consider that your bridesmaids will all be near you at the altar, you might end up feeling that there are more people standing up there than there are sitting down in the congregation.

If the bride and groom both have small families it can also look odd for the bride to have a larger number of bridesmaids. One of the reasons why some brides choose a lot of bridesmaids is because they don’t want to offend anyone by leaving them out. This is understandable but you need to think about how your choice of bridesmaids will affect the whole proceedings. Generally speaking one or two bridesmaids is perfectly acceptable for most weddings.

In addition to this, remember that the role of a bridesmaid should be taken by someone who is very special to you. For example some couples who are already together and have children would pick their daughter (or daughters) to be a bridesmaid. Alternatively some women will choose their two best friends to take on those roles, with some younger members of the family as flower girls. This is a good point to remember as it can help to make sure some younger girls still feel included in the proceedings.

In the end the main focus for some couples will be to keep the wedding party as small and compact as possible. While some couples like having a big expensive wedding, others feel that it simply isn’t necessary. In this case you would be perfectly at liberty to have just one or two bridesmaids to help you calm your nerves and prepare for the big day.

Remember too that the more bridesmaids you have around you, the more you are likely to feel overwhelmed. They too may be unsure of their role and not want to step on each other’s toes. With just one or two key people you can be sure you are relaxed and looking forward to the day. Compare this to feeling the need to keep your group of bridesmaids in line all the time and you can see what a difference it can make.
