The
wedding ring is one of the endearing and lasting
symbols of any marriage. Long after the wedding
itself the rings are still there to remind you
of the vows you made and the person you decided
to spend the rest of your life with.
But should you get your wedding
rings engraved
before you slip them on for the very first time
on your wedding day?
This is largely a personal choice and while some
couples are happy simply to wear the rings as they
are, others wouldn’t dream of wearing them
until they bear a personal message of some kind.
The question is, what do you engrave on them if
you are going to go down this route?
You only need to go online to see that there are
plenty of different ideas you could opt for when
you want to engrave your rings. One of the simplest
ideas would be to add the date of your wedding
day. So for example you could put 12.10.10 or 12th
October 2010, depending on which format you like
the most.
But there are other ideas as well that you could
opt for. Some people like the idea of adding their
first names to the rings – Sarah and John
for example. This is again very simple but sometimes
there is no need to complicate things in this situation.
The rings are there to symbolise the marriage of
two people, so adding both names to them is a nice
and simply expressed idea.
Some people like to go for more complex ideas
though. There are several Latin sayings that are
ideal for weddings, and the Latin inscription certainly
looks lovely when inscribed on a ring. Semper Amemus
is a particularly nice choice and very appropriate
too, since it means ‘love always’.
But there are lots of other sayings you could choose
in English too if you wish.
Some couples prefer to add a more personal inscription
rather than choosing something more traditional
however. You may have a saying between the two
of you that means a lot, and this makes an ideal
choice. Just remember that you have a limited amount
of room to work with, so ensure it will actually
fit in the space you have.
The saying doesn’t have to be a romantic
one either. If you have a shared joke or a word
that makes you both smile and reminds you of each
other, why not use that on your wedding
band? After
all, no one else will see it except the two of
you – and then only when you slip the ring
off for some reason. But knowing it is there is
a nice feeling.
In the end though if you are happy to keep your
rings as they are and have no engraving put on
them, that’s fine. You can always add an
inscription later on if you both feel you should
add something to commemorate this special day.
The choice is yours.
