The Wedding Toastmaster – Essential Or Expensive?

Have you thought about hiring a wedding toastmaster for your big day? Some people love the idea of having a toastmaster but to other couples there doesn’t seem to be any point to having one. Which side of the argument do you fall on?

To begin with it is essential to understand that a toastmaster only attends the celebrations after the wedding itself. Once you know what to expect from a toastmaster you can decide whether or not to actually have one.

They will know exactly how a wedding should proceed in terms of what should happen when, and this can be a great help if you are unsure of the normal order of events. You will probably be nervous enough on the day – particularly when it comes to speeches – so having a toastmaster on hand to announce the next part of the proceedings can be an enormous help.

If you are planning a traditional wedding a toastmaster will also fit in very nicely. They will wear a long tailed coat and look very smart right down to their white gloves, so they provide an extra touch of finesse and style to the proceedings.

The part of the celebrations that the toastmaster gets involved with typically covers the start of the proceedings and runs up to the time when the speeches end and the music and dancing get underway. So you aren’t paying a toastmaster to attend the whole wedding and if you want them to take part in the latter stages you will need to ask them if they will do this for you.

Some people think that a toastmaster is unnecessary, and indeed it is a part of the wedding that you can do away with more easily if money is an issue. If you do decide not to have one though, make sure you know what order everything is going to happen in. For example who will be making speeches, and who will go first? You don’t necessarily have to follow with tradition but you should know which order everyone will go in. This results in a smoother process and fewer – if any - mistakes.

If you decide against having a toastmaster you could ask the best man to perform a similar role for you instead. If he is willing to do so, this could easily suffice and make sure that everyone knows what is happening and when.

The presence of a toastmaster is definitely a more traditional part of a wedding. As such many modern couples do not even consider having one, let alone actually decide to hire one. Some see it as an expense that can easily be avoided, whereas others wouldn’t dream of getting married and going through the day without one.

So in the end it is up to you whether you want to hire a toastmaster or not. But it is very likely that you may already know whether this is something to be added to your list of things to do.
