Ushers
have an important role at a wedding. They help
to make sure that everyone finds their seats when
they arrive before the service begins; they can
escort women as a matter of courtesy, and they
make sure that the right people are sitting in
the right places.
But does this mean you should have ushers at your
wedding?
As always it is merely a matter of personal choice.
If you want a traditional wedding where everything
is as it should be and nothing is left out, then
ushers should certainly be included. But there
is no reason why you shouldn’t dispense with
them if you would prefer not to have them.
There are many reasons why couples choose not
to have ushers. If neither partner has a large
family; or they have simply opted to have a small
wedding, then the role of an usher might be somewhat
redundant. There would certainly be no need for
an usher if you only have around twenty people
attending for example.
It becomes rather a different matter if the wedding
is going to be a huge one. If you have a couple
of hundred people or more attending then ushers
will certainly come in handy. Not everyone will
know where they are supposed to be sitting, and
the more people there are milling around trying
to find their seats the more confusing it can get.
In this situation the presence of an usher will
lead to a far smoother event. This is true when
it comes to making sure everyone leaves in an orderly
fashion, as well as arriving and sitting in the
right places.
Of course if you do decide to have ushers and
you have more than one, you should consider whether
or not to have a head usher. This is quite common
and it can be a good idea if you have chosen several
people for this role. This is because there is
always the chance that every usher will try and
take charge if you don’t already have someone
appointed for that role. The head usher will help
to make sure that everything that needs doing is
done, and all the ushers take on their roles in
the proper manner.
If you do decide to have ushers their main role
will be to ensure the service goes smoothly so
far as the guests are concerned. After the service
is over the role of the usher is over too, although
they can be called upon to help out if needed at
the celebrations afterwards.
The other important point to remember is to focus
on who you will choose to be an usher. You need
to choose people who are well suited to the role,
and of course it is a role that is traditionally
taken on by a man as well. Whatever you do make
sure you select people who will take the role seriously
and do you proud on the day. This is, after all,
what an usher is there for.
